From The Big Screen to Broadway 2018

Adaptation? A crime? From the big screen to Broadway? After this year I think it will be officially normal to watch a movie and expect a possible theater version. Though some conservative theatergoers  may find this practice a little out of line, I know a couple that are very ready for Frozen and Harry Potter on Broadway.  The lineup for the 2018 season of new musicals, revivals, and plays is bursting with potential and there are some Broadways musicals that somehow have been on the big screen before.  Peruse the list below, and begin booking your next trip to New York City’s Theater District. ​

Frozen | February 2018 | St. James Theatre

From Disney, the producer of The Lion King, Mary Poppins and Beauty and the Beast, comes the beloved tale of two sisters torn apart and their journey to find themselves and their way back to each other. Mean Girls | March 2018 | August Wilson Theatre

After years of living with her zoologist parents in Africa, Cady Heron moves to Illinois and must find where she fits in the social hierarchy. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child | March 2018 | Lyric Theatre (Broadway)

Harry Potter on Broadway! It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children. While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. My Fair Lady | March 2018 | Vivian Beaumont Theatre

My Fair Lady is a musical based upon George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion and with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. The story concerns Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins, a phoneticist, so that she may pass as a well-born lady. The musical’s 1956 Broadway production was a hit, setting what was then the record for the longest run of any major musical theatre production in history. It was followed by a hit London production, a popular film version, and numerous revivals. It has been called “the perfect musical”.  More info

Pretty Woman | July 2018 | Nederlander Theatre

The story of Pretty Woman enters on the down-on-her-luck Hollywood prostitute Vivian Ward (Roberts) who is hired by a wealthy businessman, Edward Lewis (Gere), to be his escort for several business and social functions, and their developing relationship over the course of Vivian’s week-long stay with him. King Kong – October 2018 | Broadway Theatre

Based on the novel of the original 1933 screenplay, the stage show of King Kong is a contemporary take on the classic tale of beauty and the beast. More info
